Congress May Pass REAL ID Act This Week

May 5, 2005

Congress will most likely pass the REAL ID Act as early as this week. This law has drastic consequences for protecting civil liberties, victims of persecution, and judicial review. For the first time since the Civil War, the writ of habeas corpus, which allows detainees to challenge the legality of their detention, will be suspended. In the name of national security, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will have unprecedented authority. Despite strong opposition from numerous groups including conservatives and libertarians, it looks like the bill will be signed by the White House.
