STATEMENT FROM LT. GOV. CRUZ BUSTAMANTE ON GOV. SCHWARZENEGGER’S PRAISE FOR THE ‘MINUTEMAN’ CAMPAIGN

“Governor Schwarzenneger’s comments on the ‘Minuteman’ campaign in the Southwest are irresponsible and uncalled for. It is shameful to praise this group that President Bush portrays as being a bunch of vigilantes and whose operation threads on the borderline of legality.

“Our nation’s border is an issue that needs to be addressed by the federal government, and not a group of gun-toting goons. Yes, the border situation is a delicate and critical issue that needs to be resolved, but it should be left to national and international representatives who are well versed and educated on how to best craft a resolution. Supporting movements such as the ‘Minuteman’ project encourages militia-minded groups to take government issues into their own hands.

“One has to wonder why an immigrant is calling for the closure of the border between Mexico and the United States? Why isn’t this same immigrant utilizing his stature as Governor of California to bring all groups together instead of launching scapegoating attacks on our immigrant brothers and sisters?

“A decade ago, Governor Pete Wilson sparked a wave of similar immigrant bashing. Nothing constructive came from that-only divisiveness and the polarization of our communities.

“Governor Schwarzenegger’s comments are an outrage. He should apologize-once again-for his ill-timed and ill-conceived remarks.”
