Italian Immigrants Mourn Pope’s Death

April 4, 2005

The Italian Catholic immigrant community is mourning the Pope’s death. From New York Times: “Italy is home to millions of foreigners, legal and illegal. A vast majority of them are Catholics who earn low wages. One fifth of applications for residency in Italy cite religious commitment as a motivation. An estimated 64,000 Filipinos live in Rome alone, Filipino church groups said. More than 56,000 Romanians and nearly 20,000 Poles live here, according to the religious charity Caritas. Many nationalities have been given churches of their own, where ceremonies are read in their native languages and adapted to their homelands’ customs.”
